The drone world is constantly evolving as technology improves and costs reduce. First came the big drones, the Cinestar 8's and other expensive heavy lifting drones. These were shortly followed by the boom in 450-sized quadcopters like the DJI Flamewheel. Now the craze is for mini 250-sized FPV racing drones, which are undoubtedly the most exciting of the bunch.

As racing drones go, the DYS BG-250 racing quadcopter is one the best out there and one of the most affordable too. It will appeal to beginners and those who want to start flying quickly as it comes fully assembled straight out of the box; just add your receiver and battery to start flying.

The DYS BG-250 also has to be one of the best looking racing drones on the market thanks to its beautiful carbon fibre frame and integrated electronics, which include front and rear high powered LED lights. Traditional racing drone kits come as an assortment of parts; motors, ESCs and a mass of wiring to connect it all together. Anyone that has built one knows how hard it is to make it look neat. The BG-250's integrated electronics not only results in a very neat looking package, but also a performance advantage too. Wiring is heavy, so doing away with it gives a good weight saving. The BG-250 is one of the lightest racing drones out there, weighing in at just 275grams.

The BG-250 utilises a well-proven power system based on the popular DYS 1806 motor paired with 20amp BLHeli ESCs. Ask anyone about the DYS 1806 motor in drone racing circles and they will tell you that it's a reliable motor with great performance. Top speeds in excess of 40mph are well within reach using a 3S LiPo battery and even more if you upgrade to a 4S.

Although the BG-250 doesn't come with  FPV gear, it's all setup to carry it. The frame has a mounting plate for a CCD board camera and the bottom plate PCB includes a built-in voltage regulator, which has four 5v outputs and 1 single 12v output, ready to power your FPV equipment. To complete a FPV setup you’ll need a camera and video transmitter on the drone itself and a video receiver and display (either a monitor or pair of goggles) for the ground station.

While the BG-250 is designed as a FPV racing drone, you don't have to use it for that. Thanks to its fantastic gyro stablised flight controller, the CC3D, the BG-250 is as happy flying slowly as it is quickly. So if you just want something to learn to fly with it, the BG-250 will suit you fine. Equally, if you are more into acrobatics, simply turn off the auto stabilisation and you will be able to do flips and rolls.

Racing drones and crashing go hand in hand, it's part of the sport, but you needn't worry. As racing drones don't weigh a lot, they don't carry a lot of inertia. Most crashes just result in a broken prop, which are very cheap to replace and can be fixed in seconds. As it happens the kit even comes with a spare set of props; you get one full set of nylon props, one full set of carbon fibre props. The BG-250's frame is very strong and can survive a lot, but if you do find yourself crashing into an oak tree and needing a spare part, we can supply spares as we deal directly with DYS.

The bottom plate has all the circuitry built-in, so there are no messy wires between the CC3D flight controller and the ESCs. It also features a built-in voltage-regulated power supply which has four 5V outputs and one 12V output, allowing you to easily power your FPV gear. Finally, the integrated XT60 battery connector makes attaching and disconnecting your battery quick and easy.
